Where Are You?

March #SOL16 Day 18

“Whererrrrre arrrrrrre yoooooooou???”

This is the question I hear each and every time I call my mom.

It used to annoy me.  A lot.

I mean – come on.  When I call her I am usually either at home or in my car on my way home. If I’m not in either of those places then I have been meticulous in sharing my plans with her so as to avoid any confusion.

It used to annoy me.  A lot.  But then I realized this isn’t about me.

Since the day my mom moved down the hall from me four years ago her whole world has been wrapped up in my life.  She is dependent on me for everything.   She left her independence back in the suburbs.  Now, living in the city, she relies on me to do her grocery shopping, to take her to doctor and hair appointments, to cut her toenails, to fix the washing machine and the T.V. and the coffee pot that suddenly stopped working, to find those perfect sweat pants WITH pockets for her at Carson’s, to buy her the Christmas presents that she will give to the family, to order her prescriptions and to fill her weekly pill containers, to rub her arm at night, and to keep her company.  My moms days are very quiet and she counts on me…for just about everything.

When I finally realized all of this I stopped being annoyed.

  1. How special it is to have the time with your mom. I know it can get hectic at times, but in the long run it is all worth it. What a wonderful daughter you are, and your mom knows it too!!!

  2. Boy this hit close to home. My mom is showing early signs of dementia and many times I get “annoyed” with her. She has changed so much. Your post is one I needed to read.

  3. Yikes. I think the tables are turned. This reminds me of when my kids were very little and relied on me for everything. I often felt like they were sucking the life right out of me. (Okay, not a proud thing to admit to but a true thing for sure). But, you are her lifeline, her connection to the wider world. Take care of you too, Carrie.

  4. This makes me want to cry. It’s funny how life has a way of changing our perspective on things. She is definitely lucky to have a daughter like you.
